The folks over at Voyr are trying to prove a new business model for the music business by creating a subscription service that allows fans to watch live streams of the daily happenings of their favorite musicians. Their first subjects will be Jay-Z and Kanye West as they embark on the Watch The Throne tour this fall.
Personally this looks like a cash grab which is going to flop and over-saturate Jay-Z and Kanye’s image. Think about it? Most up and coming rappers do this already with their daily webisodes which they give away for free on their youtube channels and in the process of gaining fans they also end up losing them because they humanize themselves way too much (See J.Cole’s cornball antics). Granted Jay-Z and Kanye are veterans with a devoted following which is obviously why Voyr made them their guinea pigs (granted incredibly paid guinea pigs, as they are likely getting a huge cut of revenues).
I do wonder how many subscribers they need to make the whole thing worthwhile? My best guess would be 50,000, which would bring in $250,00 per month. Supposing the tour lasts for three months they will have grossed roughly $750k. I know Voyr is probably not even looking to break even as they would like to prove the business model first and are going to be spending a lot on server costs, promotion and to the artists themselves.
As for the price point, while I would be curious to watch the daily lives of Jay-Z and Kanye, heck I watch the Kardashians, I’m not sure I would pay $4.99 per month to watch them perform the Watch The Throne show day in and day out. Maybe if it was a one time fee, maybe I would consider it. Besides the whole thing will likely end up on blogs and torrents for free anyway, which is how most savvy online hip hop fans consume their music anyway.
