REVIEW: Kanye West – Graduation

Graduation (Album Cover)

Review: 4 out of 5

Best Song: Can’t Tell Me Nothing

Yeezy’s 3rd installment is better than most of the shit being offered by his peers, but we over here at YoRapper thinks he could have done a little better. Check the song by song breakdown foo! P.S. Where’s Bernie Mac?

1. Good Morning (intro)

This is how to start an album, perfect beat and lyrics are nice, my favourite line, “good morn-y-ing, look at the valedictorian, scared of the future while I hop in the delorean”. Only thing I wish was that Ye gave us another verse, cause his verse’s seem mad short.

2. Champion

An uptempo loop that could get annoying. This is sorta like the light version of “Touch the Sky.” Not really sure what this song is about, Ye talks about his dad and tries to make it sound cool. Don’t feel any emotion other than when the hook kicks in, then I think the hooks talking to me; “Did you realize that you were a champion”.

3. Stronger

This has to be the gayest song in hip hop history. I mean it’s ok to reach out to the Euro-trash in attendance but do you really think they actually listen to hiphop? Plus the lyrics diverge between believing in yourself and talking to some hoe at the club, wtf. Best part of the song “You know how long I been on ya, since Prince was on Apolonia, since OJ had Isotoners”.

4. I Wonder

This is a sweet ass sample. I’m feeling it heavy, but this foo Yeezy’s subject matter has nothing to do with the sample which is also the hook, wtf. Again, he’s talking to some wifey about some abstract relationship issues. I would have used this beat to make a song about trying to find my dreams which is what the hook references, duh.

5. Goodlife feat. T-Pain

This beat is certainly inspiring and the hook fits perfectly. However, the lyrics are water-down like beer piss. This should be the next single though.

6. Can’t Tell Me Nothing

This has to be my favorite joint on the album as I recently just quit my day job to pursue my own rise to riches. Nothing bad to say about this track, except this beat is hard as hell to rap too.

7. Barry Bonds ft. Lil Wayne

Only reason this song even made the album is cause Lil Wayne’s on this. Not that Wayne does anything extraordinary for the track as he normally does. Best line: Lil Wayne “Im still Cole (Cold) like Keisha’s family”.

8. Drunk and Hot Girls ft. Mos Def

At first listen you probably going to hate this, but this song is catchy as hell. And if you are a cool dude you can probably relate to this shit, I know I can sucka!

9. Flashing Lights ft. Dwele

Good song about flashing lights. Nah, but another Yeezy introspective about gold-diggers, where have we heard this narrative before? Oh yeah. This song would have done better if Justin Timberlake was on it as I’m pretty sure Dwele (who?) doesn’t have these kinda problems.

10. Everything I Am

This is a good concept and the beat is very smooth, but Yeezy’s breath control is all over the place making otherwise good lyrics difficult to truly feel. And why can’t Kanye just be serious for once on a track, I mean not since College Dropout has that foo been serious.

11. The Glory

This is just a random song by Kayne West about how glorious Kayne West is. Some good raps in this one though, “At the Grammy’s I went ultra Travolta, yeah that tuxedo might of been a little Guido, but with my ego, I can stand there in a speedo and be looked at like a fucking hero.” haha.

12. Homecoming ft. Chris Martin

One of the best songs about Chi-town using Common’s “I Used to Love H.E.R.” narrative. Overall a good sounding song, no matter if you care about Chicago or not. Best line: “But if you really cared for her, then you would have never hit the airport, to follow your dreams”.

13. Big Brother

This is the best Yeezy song to the die hard hiphop fan, because you get the inside scoop on his relationship with Hov (that’s Jay-Z). It’s also the most original song ever made as no other rapper would dare to dedicate a whole song to another LIVING rapper. Best line: “To be number one, I have to beat my brother”. “If you admire somebody then you should go ahead and tell em/ people never get the flowers before they could smell em”.
