The first official single of Nicki Minaj’s second album “Pink Friday 2: Roman’s Revenge” is not the pop-heavy “Super Bass” many would expect it to be. In fact, it’s the Nicki Minaj from “Monster” that makes an appearance over a synth heavy clap beat. I do like that Nicki’s bringing a theatrical element to hip pop, and she is for sure the only female rapper capable of pulling this style of gracefully, but for some reason it just doesn’t feel right. Maybe because it feels like she’s simply channeling the lean sipping Lil Wayne circa 2007 – she even ends the record declaring “I am the female weezy”. I’m not sure that’s a good thing.
