Favorite Scene: When the credits roll.
The biggest problem I have with computer generated characters is that they are difficult to relate with, especially when they are 10 feet tall blue cat-like creatures with tails, which is the case in Avatar. James Cameron’s overly hyped film doesn’t deliver on any front and I strongly recommend that you do not see it in theaters, but rather on DVD or stream it online. Although many claim the 3D effects as a “vital theater experience”, they are really not, other than a couple scenes where the bugs in the forest seem like they are actually in the theater, there’s really no point to seeing it in 3D.
After you get over the life-like qualities of the computer generated “blue guys” known as the Na’vi, you really don’t care whether they live or die. In fact, at some parts in the movie I was hoping they would lose their precious forest to the capitalist-militaristic-humans. But then again, I didn’t really care if the humans won as I had no clue what they we’re fighting for, oh yeah some rock called “unobtainium” that we are never informed its purpose. I kept thinking I was watching a kid’s movie where things are generally not supposed to make sense, but some greater lesson is supposed to be learned.
The only cool thing I found about the Na’vi universe was that they have a sorta of organic network with every living thing which allows them to “upload” and “download” information between organisms sorta of like if every living thing had email without all the cables, routers and servers. Though what they do have instead is their “hair” which they plug into trees, horses and terradactyls in order to communicate with them. This idea was really cheesy as if they we’re a really futuristic they could connect to others using telepathy, even we have wi-fi.
All in all if you are looking for an entertaining blockbuster with special effects, this is not the movie, instead try 2012.
