As a student of the game, I love studying how rappers become successful and every success story seems to be unique in their own way. 50 Cent blew up off mixtapes, which pretty much saturated the mixtape game. Drake blew off a co-sign and making a mixtape, album quality, which inspired a whole generation to drop “free albums”. Now Macklemore & Ryan Lewis have changed the game again by doing it all independently and making better videos then artists on major labels. What has interested me about M&RL’s run and what I would ask them if I interviewed them is: are you scared? Because it is highly unlikely they will have the same success their second time around. Though I’m sure it is pretty much unprecedented for an indie rap duo to have 3 hit songs. Anyway, in this interview Ryan Lewis admits, yes he is scared about the follow up album.
