XXL just announced the Freshman Class for 2013 and it looks like a lot of the spots were bought by labels. But that’s probably been going on since forever. Anyway, the winner of the people’s spot is this dude named Dizzy Wright, he’s signed to Hopsin’s label and hails from Las Vegas. I’m a little disappointed Riff Raff didn’t make the list because he’s had a breakout year.
Here’s the names of the 2013 XXL Freshman:
Action Bronson
Kirko Bangz
Travi$ Scott
Dizzy Wright
Angel Haze
Chief Keef
Schoolboy Q
Trinidad Jame$
Joey Bada$$
Ab-Soul
Logic
And this wouldn’t be a YoRapper post if I didn’t share my thoughts on this new class, like I did last year.
Action Bronson
If you weren’t a fan of Action, you’ll be after you watch The Symbol. He’s also the closest thing ol’ heads have to Ghostface.
Kirko Bangz
I still don’t like this guy’s shtick: Fake-Drake-autotuned-girl-pandering-rap. Yep that about describes it.
Travi$ Scott
I really saw potential in this dude after hearing Animal and his other earlier material. But now I’m not so sure. I’m a big Kanye fan and this guy is heavily perched on Kanye’s nuts. We’ll see if he can deliver on his upcoming tape Owl Pharaoh.
Dizzy Wright
I enjoyed his song “Fly High”, not sure I would listen to it again. From his other material, he’s definitely bringing something new to the game. But we’ll see if he’s smart enough to actually pull it off.
Angel Haze
She’s had two good songs and one of them was a freestyle. She’s also built up a small following on youtube, so she’s a bit interesting in that way, but there ware indie rappers with way more subscribers than her.
Chief Keef
Not sure why Keef is on here. He’s already had his run.
Schoolboy Q
He hasn’t released anything worth since late 2011, I even said he should have been in 2012’s Freshman Class. I’m sure Kendrick Lamar has something to do with this.
Trinidad Jame$
I love this guy, but he hasn’t released anything else nor does he have anything as good on his mixtape as “All Gold Everything”. I wouldn’t be surprised if Def Jam ponied up for this spot.
Joey Bada$$
I doubt he’ll have ever have a hit song, but I’m sure Joey will go the distance.
Ab-Soul
This guy is not bad and he does have a small following, but again Kendrick had something to with this.
Logic
I’ve never heard of this guy, but good for him for being a rapper named Logic to make it on to XXL. What their are only like ten million unsigned rappers named Logic?
